How to Make Garlic Herb Cream Cheese for Bagels
Homemade Cheese Spread with Garlic and Herbs
-
Total Time
40 minutes (including chilling)
Here's a DIY version of the flavored, spreadable Gournay cheese originally from France.
Ingredients
Makes about 1 cup
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 small garlic clove, quartered
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 cup chopped parsley leaves
1 tablespoon chopped chives
Crackers or toasts (for serving)
Step 1
Combine cream cheese, butter, garlic, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until smooth. Add parsley and chives and pulse a few times until well combined. Pack mixture into a small bowl, ramekin, or glass jar. Cover and chill at least 30 minutes. Serve with crackers or toasts.
Do Ahead
Step 2
Cheese can be made 5 days ahead. Cover and chill.
Cooks' Note
To add a citrus note to the cheese, incorporate 1/8 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest with the herbs. Or add 1/8 teaspoon (or more) freshly ground black pepper for a little spice.

This was wonderful and I let the finished dish refrigerate over night and it helped meld the flavors beautifully. It is an easy recipe and whenever I serve it there are no leftovers!

This recipe works very well if you substitute creme fraiche for cream cheese. I like the idea of adding some tarragon, too.

Took it to a family event and the serving container was scraped clean. I will be making again and I did let it sit in the fridge for a few days before serving.

Delicious and yummy!

This is a really tasty cream cheese recipe. The garlic, salt and chives were a great combination. I didn't have parsley on hand so I omitted it. We used it on bagels with sliced tomatoes and red onions. I'd definitely make it again.

Always a simple perfect sophisticated recipe!

Been making this for years. Great in an omelet and on mashed potatoes.

The favorite dip at the NYE party I hosted. I didn't even have the bread crisps but instead used totally lame keebler crackers. It was the first dish to get devoured.

Wow. This is a keeper and going into our family "Tested Best" book! Perhaps I was a little liberal with the garlic (more is always better to my family) and it held true for yet another recipe. We were invited to a friend's house for dinner and I'm bringing this with small toasts. I'm sure it'll be a hit!

Great recipe. Easy and delicious. I added a bit of lemon zest. I would recommend this.

A favorite spread that is even better using goat cheese- and less fat and calories!!! A little tarragon ramps up the "frenchness" as well.

This is delicious, and I have been making this "Boursin" knock-off for years, to the delight of my guests. To mine, I also add a little of each: dried basil, thyme, and oregano. The down sides are, there's never any left for me the next day, and folks get so full they can't finish dinner!

To Michelle in Ecuador: if you have mild (creamy) plain yogurt available you could strain it to make yogurt cheese, and that could perhaps work....
